Assistant Accountant – Payroll
THE PAPUA NEW GUINEA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY
The Papua New Guinea University of Technology (PNGUoT) is seeking a qualified and motivated individual to join the Bursary Department as an Assistant Accountant – Payroll. The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising and ensuring the accurate and timely processing of fortnightly payroll and salary payments. The position will report to the Management Accountant and will assist in maintaining accurate payroll records and ensuring that payroll processes are completed efficiently and in accordance with University policies and procedures.
Primary Responsibilities
Payroll Processing
- Lead and coordinate the fortnightly payroll process.
- Coordinate and input payroll variations.
- Ensure payroll is processed accurately and within the required deadlines.
- Ensure timely distribution of payslips.
Compliance with laws/requirements
- Ensure compliance with DPM requirements and IRC policies.
- Ensure employee tax and superannuation obligations are calculated and paid accurately and on time.
- Ensure superannuation schedules/lists are submitted on time.
- Ensure group tax is paid and returns lodged before the IRC due date (7th of new month)
Reports
- Ensure payroll transactions are posted to the General Ledger after payroll is released.
- Ensure monthly payroll rollover is completed.
- Conduct and complete monthly payroll reconciliations within the required timeframe.
- Prepare and maintain accurate payroll reports.
Employee and Internal Support
- Respond to employee payroll-related enquiries.
- Collaborate with HR to ensure employee payroll information is accurate and up to date.
- Attend to ad-hoc payroll-related requests from the Bursar.
- Lead and supervise the Payroll team to ensure efficient and accurate payroll operations.
Qualification & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Banking and Business Management, or a related field.
- A minimum of 3–5 years’ hands-on experience in a similar role.

- Mature, with strong and proven leadership skills.
- Ability to work extended hours and travel at short notice, as required.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure.
- Of sober habits.
Conditions of Service
Base Salary:
- Assistant Accountant I K40,781.00 – K49,843.00 plus DMA of K1,800 per annum
- Assistant Accountant II K46,556.00 – K56,902.00 plus DMA of K6,677.00 per annum
(Level of appointment depends upon qualification and experience)
