PNGUoT Promotes Cybersecurity Awareness Through Week-Long Campaign
The Papua New Guinea University of Technology (PNGUoT), through its Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Services, conducted a week-long cybersecurity awareness campaign to educate students and staff on protecting their personal information and maintaining security in the digital environment.
The Cybersecurity Awareness Week , scheduled from 12 to 16 October 2026, forms part of the University’s observance of Global Cybersecurity Awareness Month, recognised annually in October to promote safer online practices.
Under the message “Don’t Make It Easy for Them!” the campaign focused on encouraging members of the University community to take practical measures to protect their online accounts, personal information and digital devices from potential cyber threats.
The initiative highlights four key cybersecurity practices: creating strong and unique passwords, enabling Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), recognising phishing emails and keeping software updated.
These practices are intended to help students and staff better understand common cybersecurity risks and the steps they can take to reduce their exposure to online threats.
As the use of digital platforms continues to form part of teaching, learning, research and administrative activities, cybersecurity awareness remains an important aspect of protecting information and maintaining secure access to online services.
The campaign also encourages individual responsibility, recognising that everyday actions, including password management and identifying suspicious emails, contribute to the overall security of the University’s digital environment.
Since the official opening on Monday, ICT Services have been conducting daily lunchtime awareness sessions from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm in front of Duncanson Hall.
The sessions provide opportunities for students and staff to engage in cybersecurity awareness activities and test their understanding of safe online practices through daily quizzes.
Through this initiative, PNGUoT ICT Services aims to strengthen cybersecurity awareness across the University and encourage students and staff to incorporate safe digital practices into their everyday activities.
The campaign serves as a reminder that protecting digital information is a shared responsibility, requiring individuals to remain alert to potential threats and take appropriate precautions when accessing online services.
The Cybersecurity Awareness Week initiative was organized and led by the ICT Services Cybersecurity Team and was supported by Theodist as the main sponsor, and Digicel PNG.
