PNGUoT Bumbu Campus Launches Koha Library Management System to Advance Digital Learning

The Papua New Guinea University of Technology (PNGUoT) has taken another significant step towards digital transformation with the official launch of the Koha Integrated Library Management System at its Bumbu Campus, providing students and staff with improved access to library resources and modern information services.

The launch on 17 July marked a milestone in the University's efforts to strengthen teaching, learning and research through technology while enhancing the delivery of library services across its campuses. Bumbu Campus Director Mr. Simeon Morean said the implementation of the Koha system demonstrates the University's commitment to innovation and academic excellence.

"Today's launch represents more than the introduction of a new digital library system. It reflects our commitment to transforming the way knowledge is accessed, managed and delivered within the University community," Mr. Simeon said. He explained that the integrated library management system will improve the management, accessibility and delivery of library services by enabling students, lecturers and researchers to search library catalogues online and access information more efficiently.

"As we continue to embrace the opportunities of the digital age, this initiative provides a strong foundation for preparing graduates with the digital literacy, research capabilities and information management skills required in today's knowledge-based economy," he said.

Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Faculty of Built Environment, Professor Cletus Gonduan, described the Koha system as a valuable gift that should be embraced and utilised by the University community.  He encouraged students to continue using library resources despite the growth of digital technology.  "A library remains the custodian of knowledge. Students who invest time in reading and researching authentic sources develop a deeper understanding of their disciplines and become stronger professionals," Professor Gonduan said.

Representing the Secretary for the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Mr. Reuben Hasu congratulated PNGUoT on embracing technology to improve higher education. "The introduction of the Koha Integrated Library Management System is a significant achievement that aligns with the Department's commitment to enhancing the quality, accessibility and relevance of higher education in Papua New Guinea," he said.

University Librarian Mr. Percy Roary said the new system will transform the way library services are delivered by allowing users to access library resources remotely. "Previously, users had to visit the library physically to locate resources. With Koha, students and staff can search the catalogue and access information anytime and from anywhere. This is about opening the door to knowledge through technology," Mr. Roary said. He added that Bumbu Campus is the first satellite campus to implement the system and announced plans to progressively extend the integrated platform across PNGUoT's other campuses.

Mr. Roary described the initiative as an investment in the University's future. "Every improvement we make to our libraries is an investment in our students, our educators and our nation. Stronger libraries create stronger learners, stronger graduates and stronger communities," he said.The launch concluded with a live demonstration of the Koha Integrated Library Management System, showcasing its online public access catalogue, circulation functions and digital search capabilities.

The implementation of the Koha system reinforces PNGUoT's commitment to digital innovation and positions the University to provide more efficient, accessible and future-ready library services for students, researchers and staff.
