Student Counsellor
Reporting directly to the Deputy Registrar, the primary role of the Student Counsellor is to help students to overcome their problems and cope with tough situations by providing a safe, confidential and encouraging environment in which to contemplate their emotional state.
Primary Responsibilities
- Counselling of students, staff and other clients as and when required.
- Referrals of clients, students and staff as and when appropriate.
- Co-ordinate, record and maintain confidential counselling information.
- Liaise with Heads of Departments, Course Advisors, and Sponsors of students in light of or as a result of student problems.
- Close liaison with Dean of Students, Medical officer, Bookshop, SRC, Sports Office, and other related bodies in regard to counselling matters.
- Screening of all matters (in the first instance) that involves counselling
- Serve on university committees and external to it as and when required.
- Maintain budget, finance, funds relating to that of students use, and that of the Counselling unit.
- To liaise, coordinate and ensure that the Chaplaincy service on campus is active on campus for the benefit of students and staff.
- Conduct administrative duties of counselling Unit and staffing matters, e.g., promotion, leave, etc. in line with normal University procedures.
- Direct survey, study, research, innovations to improve services and functions of the Unit and the university in regards to students.
- Call, initiate meetings at regular intervals among sectional heads of Students facilities to monitor, appraise, resolve, decide on issues of importance concerning students.
- General liaison with sponsors, prospective employers where appropriate or where requests are made.
- To carry out specific tasks directed or requested for either by the Vice Chancellor or the Registrar and their deputies.
- Conduct end of the year review of the unit staff performance and the services
- For students’ personal and professional development, identify, explore, initiate and organize appropriate community orientated activities to encourage student participation.
- Liaise, support, encourage student professional associations, clubs, groups and societies where available skills and expertise can be utilized for betterment of campus community and outside.
- Liaison with Sports Coordinator, SRC and others on intramural activities.
- Participate in internal and external seminars, lecturers, workshops, sessions where community development is involved.
- Monitor, record progress, development and growth of participating students through Community Development activities for the purpose of university, sponsors and the students.
- To attend to any other duties delegated by the Deputy Registrar (SFC)
Qualification & Experience
The successful candidate should:
- Must have a Bachelors Degree in Psychology, Social Work or Education and minimum of 5 years experience in Counselling work.
- Minimum of 5 years hands on experience in counselling or similar work.
- The successful candidate should be a mature and compassionate leader with excellent interpersonal and listening skills, capable of remaining calm under pressure, managing emergencies effectively, and demonstrating patience, empathy, and a positive sense of humor in challenging situations
Conditions of Service
Assistant Registrar I – K40,781 – K49,843 per annum DMA – K1,800 per annum (Domestic Market Allowance)
Assistant Registrar II – K46,556 – K56,902 per annum DMA – K6,677 per annum (Domestic Market Allowance)
(Level of appointment depends upon qualification and experience)
