Applications are sought from suitably qualified Papua New Guineans to fill the following positions within the Faculty of Natural Resources, School of Forestry of the University.
School of Forestry
The School is spread over PNGUoT’s three campuses: Taraka main campus in Lae; Bulolo campus located 3 hours drive from the main campus and surrounded by PNG’s largest Araucaria and pine plantations; and PNG’s largest downstream processor of timber operated by the PNG Forest Products Limited; and the Bumbu campus (formerly TFTC), which is 20 minutes drive from the main campus. The School offers a 4- year BSc Degree in Forestry at the main Taraka campus; 4- year Bachelor’s Degree in Forest Resource Management at the Bulolo campus; and a 2- year Diploma in Wood Processing and Manufacturing at the Bumbu campus.

The Lecturer of Plantation Silviculture & Agroforestry will play a pivotal role in the delivery and continuous development of forestry education and research at the School of Forestry, Papua New Guinea University of Technology. The position exists to equip graduates with the knowledge and practical skills required for sustainable plantation forestry, agroforestry, and land-use management, while advancing research, innovation, and community engagement that support the sustainable development of Papua New Guinea and the Pacific region.
Primary Responsibilities
About the Role
The Lecturer in Plantation Silviculture & Agroforestry will play a key role in delivering high-quality teaching, research, and professional engagement within the School of Forestry at Papua New Guinea University of Technology. The position contributes to developing future forestry professionals equipped with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to address contemporary challenges in plantation forestry, agroforestry systems, sustainable land-use management, and community-based natural resource development in Papua New Guinea and the Pacific region.
The appointee will be expected to:
- Coordinate at least two of the subjects related to Plantation Silviculture, Agroforestry, and Forestry Extension in a semester.
- Deliver high-quality lectures, seminars, practical classes, fieldwork, and tutorials.
- Contribute to curriculum development and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Teach and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students in areas related to plantation establishment, forest nursery operations, agroforestry systems, and sustainable land-use practices.
- Engage in independent and collaborative research, contributing to the School’s research outputs and industry engagement activities.
- Develop and maintain partnerships with industry, government agencies, local communities, and other stakeholders.
- Contribute to outreach and extension activities that promote sustainable forestry and agroforestry practices.
- Support the integration of forestry-related technologies, including GIS, experimental design, and biostatistical applications, into teaching and research.
- Participate in the School’s strategic planning, quality assurance, and international networking activities.
- Perform assigned duties in accordance with University policies, procedures, and academic standards.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Coordinate and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Plantation Silviculture, Agroforestry, Forestry Extension, and related disciplines.
- Develop and deliver high-quality lectures, tutorials, practical classes, field exercises, and distance-learning materials.
- Teach plantation establishment and management, including site preparation, species selection, silvicultural treatments, harvesting, and plantation productivity.
- Teach and supervise practical training in forest nursery operations, including seed collection and handling, tree seed selection, extraction and storage, soil sterilization, seed germination, seedling production, forest tree stand improvement operations, and nursery management.
- Deliver courses in Agroforestry with emphasis on sustainable land-use systems, integration of forestry and agriculture, and community-based natural resource management.
- Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects and provide academic mentoring to students.
- Conduct high-quality research and publish in reputable peer-reviewed journals in areas related to plantation forestry, agroforestry, and sustainable land-use management.
- Secure external research funding and develop collaborative research partnerships with industry, government agencies, communities, and international institutions.
- Lead and participate in outreach, extension, and community engagement activities that promote sustainable forestry and agroforestry practices throughout Papua New Guinea and the Pacific region.
- Apply and promote the use of forestry-related technologies, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), data analysis, experimental design, and biostatistical techniques in teaching and research.
- Contribute to curriculum review, quality assurance, accreditation processes, and the continuous improvement of academic programs.
- Support the School’s strategic planning, international networking, and collaborative initiatives across the University and with external stakeholders.
- Undertake administrative, academic, and professional duties as assigned and perform all responsibilities in accordance with University policies and standards.
Qualification & Experience
- A Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or PhD degree in Forest Science, Biological Sciences, or a closely related field from a recognized university.
- Demonstrated exceptional academic leadership with the ability to contribute to teaching, research, and institutional development.
- A minimum of three (3) years’ work experience in a classroom-based academic environment or in a relevant forestry/industry-related role.
- Prior teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in relevant forestry science and forestry disciplines, including:
- Plantation Silviculture
- Agroforestry
- Forest Extension
- Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality teaching, supervision, and academic mentoring in higher education settings.
- Familiarity with distance education delivery modes, including the use of Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Google Classroom, Moodle, or equivalent platforms, will be considered an added advantage.
- Strong capability in integrating research, teaching, and applied field-based learning within forestry and biological sciences.

Conditions of Service
- Base Salary: Lecturer I/II PGK47,060 – PGK67,702 per annum
- Domestic Market Allowance: PGK13,639 – PGK31,585 per annum
(Level of appointment depends upon qualification and experience)
