PNGUoT Celebrates International Accreditation of Engineering Programs: Recognition under Washington Accord Sets Global Standard for PNGUoT Engineering Graduates
The Papua New Guinea University of Technology (PNGUoT) officially unveiled a commemorative plaque to signify the international accreditation of its engineering programs by Engineers Australia, under the Washington Accord. This marked a historic achievement for the institution and Papua New Guinea’s education sector. A momentous occasion that was celebrated and witnessed by staff, students, government and industry partners and stakeholders, both national and international.

PNGUoT Vice Chancellor, Professor Ora Renagi, congratulated the University community.
“This remarkable accomplishment is a testament to the dedication and hard work of PNGUoT wholly… We are greatly overjoyed with the achievement of the full accreditation of the five engineering programs at PNGUoT.”

Professor Renagi specifically acknowledged the efforts of faculty, students, and supporting staff in attaining the full international accreditation.
PNGUoT Chancellor, Sam Koim, described the recognition as a turning point for PNG’s higher education sector.
“This accreditation means our graduates now stand equal with their peers globally, opening doors for them to work and contribute anywhere in the world. It shows that we can build world-class institutions in Papua New Guinea.”
He also tied the achievement to a broader national narrative.
“This is a proud moment for the University, our graduates, and our nation, especially as we celebrate 50 years of independence.”

Mr. Koim further acknowledged the efforts of PNGUoT’s leadership and stakeholders.
“It is a testament to the tireless efforts of our Vice Chancellor and Executive Team, our academic staff, the Industry Advisory Board, Engineers Australia, the Institute of Engineers PNG, and our generous industry partners who made this possible.”
Keynote Speaker, Deputy Prime Minister John Rosso congratulated and commended the university Council, Management, and faculty staff for their dedication and commitment.
“You have not only elevated the reputation of Papua New Guinea University of Technology, you have elevated the reputation of our country…We also acknowledge the industry partners. ”

While delivering a virtual address, Engineers Australia Chief Engineer Katherine Richards congratulated PNGUoT, and highlighted the importance of the institution’s accredited degrees.
“This is critical for several reasons… It facilitates the global movement of engineering human capital through mutual recognition and assurance processes. It promotes collaboration and the building of like-minded professional teams to come together across borders, to solve complex problems…most importantly, it unites our global profession with shared confidence in the competence of one another, and through this, we earn the trust and respect of the communities that we serve.”
The Washington Accord is a multilateral agreement among organizations responsible for accrediting tertiary-level engineering qualifications around the world.
The commemorative event received generous support from Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited (KPHL) as the Diamond Sponsor, along with other sponsors including ExxonMobil PNG, Turra Holdings Limited, the Institution of Engineers PNG (IEPNG), K92 Mining Limited, Ramu NiCo, IKAD International, Hex Creative, and the National Airports Corporation (NAC).
With this international recognition, PNGUoT cements its place among leading engineering institutions worldwide.
