The Papua New Guinea University of Technology (PNGUoT) has reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing young leaders with the official signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Voice Inc. (TVI) and the launching of the new Centre for Leadership on campus.

The ceremony, held at the university’s Taraka campus on the 28th of October, brought together students, staff, and representatives from The Voice Inc., a non-governmental organization known for its youth empowerment programs, including the Clean Generation Movement.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Garry Sali, commended the initiative and the students involved, emphasizing that leadership development complements academic excellence.

“Education is not just about passing exams. It’s also about building character and shaping responsible citizens. Getting involved in organizations like this is very important. When you participate, you will see changes.”

Final-year student and TVI representative, Charles Sorman, delivered an inspiring address about his journey joining TVI since 2019 as a secondary school student.

Mr Sorman said joining TVI equipped him with leadership skills which he utilized since first year as a student leader, and helped him to understand the true meaning of making an impact and community development.   “Community development is not just about awareness,” he said. “It’s about changing lives one at a time. The Clean Generation gave me a safe space to turn empathy into action.”

Outgoing Executive Director of The Voice Inc. Ms. Maliwai Sasingian expressed her gratitude for the university’s decade-long partnership, first established in 2013 and for providing a space for TVI Office on campus . “Our mission is to empower young Papua New Guineans to be active citizens and nation builders…through this space, students can grow in confidence, leadership, and purpose.”

Ms. Sasingian, who has now concluded her eight-year tenure as Executive Director, reflected on witnessing the growth of student leadership at PNGUoT.

”I have seen student leadership in the campus flourish…We give them space, the tools, leadership training, tools, access to different programs and at the end of the day it is up to them, and what we hope to see are young leaders.”

Registrar Mrs. Veronica Thomas closed the event, highlighting the resilience behind the project.  “This building is more than infrastructure. It is a symbol of hope, growth, and the belief that young people can transform this nation.”

The ceremony concluded with the signing of the MoU, a dedication prayer, and the official opening of the Centre for Leadership, marking a new chapter in student empowerment at PNGUoT.
