Online Postgraduate Registration Launched

The Papua New Guinea University of Technology (PNGUoT) has launched the online postgraduate registration system, marking a significant move in the University’s ongoing commitment to digitizing academic and administrative processes.

The move from manual registration process to online registration is aimed at improving efficiency, clean documentation, for administration staff, while faster and convenient service delivery for postgraduate students. This system is expected to reduce delays associated with paper-based systems.

Acting Dean of the Postgraduate Studies Research and Innovation (PNGSRI) Professor Rajashekhar Rao said the shift directly addresses long-standing challenges in postgraduate student administration.

“One of the most important benefits we see is systematic documentation,” Professor Rao said. “With manual registration, documents have to pass through several offices, and during that transit there can be delays or breaks. With the online process, we expect registration to be seamless, with no unnecessary delays, and far more convenient for both students and officers.”

While the undergraduate student registration process at PNGUoT has already been digitalized, postgraduate student registration has remained largely manual. Professor Rao acknowledged PGSRI ‘s administration team for spearheading the development of the postgraduate student online registration platform.

“For undergraduate students the system was already in place, but for postgraduate students it was lacking. This initiative has now made postgraduate digital registration possible,” he said.

A key feature of the system is the creation of a centralized postgraduate student database, enabling faster access to information, improved reporting, and reduced administrative workload.

“The advantage of a digitalized database is that we can generate reports in different formats to meet administrative needs,” Professor Rao said. “Doing this manually is very cumbersome, but digital technologies allow this work to be done rapidly and efficiently.”

Early feedback from students has been positive. Second-year Master of Science in Agriculture student Natanya Alfred said the new system has significantly improved the registration experience.

“This year it only took me one day to register,” Ms Alfred said. “Last year I had to carry hard copy documents and come back several times. The online system is much faster and easier to use.”

The rollout represents the first stage of implementation. PNGUoT’s PGSRI Faculty will continue to review the registration system and introduce improvements to integrate this to other academic data management systems.

The initiative supports the PNGUoT Strategic Plan 2025–2029, which prioritizes digital transformation, improved service delivery, and the use of technology to strengthen governance, data management, and the overall student experience.
