The Kainantu District has become the first District to sign an agreement with the Papua New Guinea University of Technology (PNGUoT) to ensure the transparent management and reporting of school fee assistance paid to its students.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Kainantu District Development Authority (KDDA) and PNGUoT recently.

The agreement continues to promote shared values of transparency and good governance and ensures the funds are not misappropriated.

Vice Chancellor Professor Ora Renagi stated that the initiative was introduced through the Registrar’s Office to engage directly with sponsors such as KDDA, rather than the previous practice where sponsors approached students to reach the University Management.

He said PNGUoT has had five consecutive years of clean audits and aims to maintain good governance and transparency in managing student fees through the MOUs.

He thanked KDDA for leading the way and encouraged other districts, provinces and corporate sponsors to follow.

University Registrar, Mrs Veronica Thomas said the University published public notices inviting all stakeholders to partner with the University to promote accountability and transparency in the management of student fees, hence, giving confidence to sponsors for their investment.

Director of the KDDA Scholarship Assistance Program Office, Mr Simon MacMao said the program shows their commitment to investing in young people from Kainantu.

“Education is the key to development. By helping our students at PNGUoT, we are building the future of Kainantu and the country,” he said.

The agreement was co-signed by Professor Renagi and Kaunantu MP, Hon. William Hagauno and witnessed by Mrs Thomas and Mr MacMao.
