Dean's Welcome Message

Hearty welcome to the Faculty of Science, Papua New Guinea University of Technology. Faculty of Science is a home for three very dynamic schools namely Applied Physics, Applied Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Science each offering rigorous programs designed to equip the students with knowledge, skills, curiosity and life skills needed for a rapidly evolving technological global environment. Schools in the faculty has a vibrant and avantgarde academic community committed to excellence in teaching, research, and innovation.

We take pride in our dedicated faculty members, cutting-edge facilities, and strong industry partnerships that provide students with opportunities for hands-on learning, research engagement, and career development. Our graduates go on to become leaders in academia, industry, and government, making meaningful contributions to science and society. As you begin your journey with us, I encourage you to embrace the challenges, seek out new perspectives, and make the most of the opportunities available to you. The Faculty of Science is not just a place to learn—it is a place to grow, discover, and shape the future.

The school of Applied Physics and Mathematics were established in 1965 with the foundation of the university.  The School of Applied Physics offer its flagship program, Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics with Electronics and Instrumentation (BSAP) since 1994. Following successful conduct of Bachelor of Radiotherapy, the school now conducts Bachelor of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering (BEBE) since 2020. The Biomedical Engineering course is designed to produce graduates with technical skills in electronics and instrumentation related to biomedical engineering.

Along with the two undergraduate programs, the school has five master’s level programs. They are Master of Science in Applied Physics, Master of Science in Climate Change and Renewable Energy Access, Master of Philosophy in Applied Physics (Research), Master of Technology in Exploration Geophysics and Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Physics. Recently inaugurated National Radiological Laboratory is part of the school. The laboratory has most advanced state-of-the-art equipment and analytical systems. The research activities of the school extend to nanotechnology, supercapacitors and energy storage devices, atmospheric studies including seismic activities, sustainable energy and geological explorations.

The school of Applied Sciences has two bachelor degree programs : Bachelor of Science in Applied Chemistry and Bachelor of Science in Food Technology. The school also houses short term courses related to food safety and allied industries. The course has been running for five years now and has successfully linked players in the food and allied industries, regulatory bodies such as NAQIA, NFA, Health Department and ICCC and academic institutions such as universities and secondary schools. The short course runs for 3-5 days per level beginning at level I, all the way to level III and is intended for personnels in the food and allied industries, food service establishments, regulatory bodies and education agencies.

The school has four programs at mater’s level. Master of Philosophy in Applied Chemistry, Master of Philosophy in Food Technology, Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Chemistry and

Doctor of Philosophy in Food Technology

The School of Applied Sciences provides laboratory facilities and academic resources to support research and analytical activities of ‘The National Food Testing and Monitoring Centre’ (NFTMC), attached to the school.

The Mission of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science is to produce quality graduates in Mathematics and Computing. Computer Science section of the school provides suitable service courses to all other Departments in the University. The school has two undergraduate programs – Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics and Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. The school also offers research-based programs – Master of Philosophy in Computer Science, Master of Philosophy in Mathematics, Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics.

As we look ahead, let us continue to push the boundaries of discovery, challenge conventional thinking, and embrace innovation with courage and purpose. The Faculty of Science thrives because of the passion of its students, the dedication of its staff, and the curiosity that drives us all to seek answers to the nation’s most pressing questions. Together, we are not only shaping the future of science but also empowering the next generation of leaders and problem-solvers. Let us move forward with confidence, knowing that every experiment, every idea, and every breakthrough brings us closer to transforming knowledge into impact. Welcome to the Faculty of Science where science meets innovation.
