The Papua New Guinea University of Technology (PNGUoT) is located in the industrial hub of Lae city, the second largest city in Papua New Guinea. The city of Lae connects to all parts of PNG through roads, sea and air. The PNGUoT has a main campus and three amalgamated colleges: the Bulolo Forestry College, the Timber and Forestry Training College, and the Lae Unitech Nursing School. These colleges became part of PNGUoT, expanding its academic programs to include forestry and nursing.
The main campus has 14 academic departments including the Department of Open and Distance Learning (DODL). The PNGUoT offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Built Environment, Engineering, Humanities and Natural Resources. The university also has an Information Technology Services Department and a Library.
School of Mining Engineering
The School of Mining Engineering is one of the four engineering departments at the PNG University of Technology and is very popular amongst prospective students both nationally and internationally, particularly the Pacific Island nations of Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. The school offers Bachelor of Mining Engineering (Honors) and Bachelor of Mineral Process Engineering (Honors) with Geology servicing both programs. The School also has a 2-year Master by Research programs – Master of Philosophy in Mining and Master of Philosophy in Mineral Processing.
A vacancy now exists in the School of Mining Engineering, most notably with its service course Geology. Applicants must be highly qualified and dedicated individuals who shall promote the School and the University as the provider of quality and skilled professionals. The appointee will report to the Head of School for academic and research, and assist in the operation and administration of the School where necessary. They will perform instructional duties, including supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students and pursue research and appropriate consulting activities in order to maintain high professional standards within the discipline. They will also be required to contribute to the school’s periodic curriculum review, development, and the current course benchmarking process.

Qualification & Experience

A Doctorate or Master’s degree from a recognized university is required for this position. The suitable candidate should be a member of a professional engineering body, have published at least 5 papers in listed, peer reviewed journals and have at least 5 years of full-time university teaching or the equivalent of that in industrial research work. The successful candidate is required to take leadership role in his/her area of specialization as well as conduct research and teach at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level.

The candidate should also possess:

  • Strong practical knowledge in geological surveys and related project work.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to student development, academic integrity, and institutional values.

The successful candidate for this position will be expected to have the capability to teach Geology core subjects across the spectrum of the mining engineering curriculum such as, but not limited to Economic Geology & Mineralogy, Engineering Geology and Geomechanics & Applied Geomechanics. Familiarity with teaching in the distance mode and with using learning management systems such as Google Classroom or Moodle will be an added advantage.

Conditions of Service

Citizen: 

  • Base Salary Range: Senior Lecturer PGK66,060 – PGK80,740 per annum
  • Base DMA Range: PGK 22,683 – PGK40,199 (DMA = Domestic Market Allowance)

(Level of appointment depends upon qualification and experience)

  • Initial contract period is for three years. Other benefits include a gratuity of 25% of salary (paid on a six-monthly basis), appointment and repatriation fares for yourself and dependents (children under 19 years), 15% of base salary paid as recreation leave fare support, settling-in allowance of PGK700.00.00 for single & PGK1,340.00 for accompanied, Settling-out allowance of K2,010.00 for single and K4,020.00 for accompanied. Book & equipment allowance of PGK1,300.00 per annum, support for approved research upon request, and staff members are also permitted to earn from consultancy engagement. Fully furnished accommodation is provided on campus.

Non-citizen:

  • Base Salary Range: Senior Lecturer PGK66,060 – PGK80,740 per annum
  • Base IMA Range: PGK88,058 – PGK107,159 per annum (IMA = International Market Allowance 

(Level of appointment depends upon qualification and experience)

  • Initial contract period is for three years. Other benefits include a gratuity of 30% of salary in the first year, 35% in the second year and 40% in the third year (paid on a six-monthly basis), appointment and repatriation for yourself and dependence (children under 19 years), six weeks paid leave per year, recreation leave fares for yourself, spouse & two authorized dependents after 18 months of service, education fares and assistance towards school fees for authorized dependents are available, Settling-in/out allowance for single and accompanied are payable on arrival and departure. Book & equipment allowance of PGK1,300.00 per annum, support for approved research upon request, and staff members are also permitted to earn from consultancy engagement. Fully furnished accommodation is provided on campus
