SCHOOL OF ELECTRICAL & COMMUNICATIONS ENGINEERING

The School of Electrical and Communications Engineering (SoECE) in one of the four engineering schools at the PNG University of Technology is popular amongst prospective students. The department offers a 4-year degree program and a 2-year postgraduate program either by coursework and research or pre-research. The postgraduate program offers a choice of specialization in power systems, control systems, computer systems engineering, and telecommunications after completing the coursework and a research project.

Laboratory Manager (EE0-101)

The laboratory manager is expected to manage the overall operations of the school’s laboratory, by maintaining/repairing the Laboratory facilities, equipment, resources and supplies, tools and teaching materials.  The incumbent will provide technical training to laboratory personnel, technical staff and students and assist academics with student research projects as well as in implementing the university’s Safety Policies and Procedures and ensuring compliance to safety regulations.

Primary Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

    • Develop achievable operational work plans in alignment to the university’s strategic goals and objectives.
    • Provide strategic technical guidance to technical officers and subordinates.
    • Provide relevant training, coaching, mentorship, professional development programs and academic training to technical staff for competency improvement and upskilling.
    • Assist academic staff in conducting laboratory and research activities as well as student projects;
    • Supervise technical staff to ensure work prioritization and continuous improvement;
    • Monitor and evaluate student’s project and provide feedback to students concerned, the HoS or his delegate;
    • Ensure legislation and standards are followed for effective resource planning.
    • Review/approve protocols and written reports and ensure a safer working environment for all staff and students consistent with the University’s OHSE policy.
    • Prepare accurate annual budgets and assist HoS in hiring relevant qualified staff and internal placement.
    • Ensure up to date records (inventory) of laboratory equipment and teaching materials.
    • Perform any related duties assigned by the HoS and or management.

Qualification & Experience

    • A Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering with 10 years of relevant work experience especially in managing laboratories, a professional qualification (MIE PNG, etc.) would be an advantage.
    • A bachelor degree in electrical and communications engineering can be considered for candidates with extensive work experience.
    • A high standard of oral and written communication skills, knowledge of computers with proficiency in Design & Statistical Software would be a definitive advantage.
    • Strong leadership, planning and organizational skills including the ability to set goals and provide positive and constructive feedback, do follow-up and hold others accountable.
    • Willingness to learn and be competent and to take initiative, be proactive and innovative.

Conditions of Service

  • Base Salary: Laboratory Manager – K60,649.00 – K74,126.00 per annum
  • Domestic Market Allowance (DMA): K10,683.00 – K16,026.00 per annum 

(Level of appointment depends upon qualification and experience)
