The University

The Papua New Guinea University of Technology is located in the industrial city of Lae, the second largest city in Papua New Guinea with flights to any location in PNG. The University is the only technological university in the country, it has a main campus and three amalgamated colleges. The main campus has 6 academic faculties under which accommodate 13 academic schools which offer undergraduate and graduate programs in engineering, natural and applied sciences, built environment, language, and business. The university has an Information Technology Services department, a Library and a Department of Open and Distance Learning (DODL) which facilitates distance learning.

School of Mechanical Engineering 

The school offers a four-year undergraduate degree accredited by Engineers Australia as per Washington accord and a graduate master’s program in Mechanical Engineering with 09 academic staff members, 09 technical staffs, and 3 administrative staffs. There are eight laboratories in Thermal and Heat Transfer, manufacturing, material science laboratory, Renewable Energy, CAD and thermodynamics that includes refrigeration and air conditioning for students’ laboratory work and research, along with a medium sized workshop with facilities for machining, milling, a computer numerical control (CNC) machine, EDM, and fabrication including a 3000-degree Celsius foundry. 

The department also has an NDT Centre for research and consultancy service to the industry. Several types of research are done in the areas of design and manufacturing, materials characterization, renewable energy and environment, mechatronics, engineering education, and refrigeration and air conditioning.

Primary Responsibilities

The Professor position is specifically in the areas of Mechanical Design; Energy and or Mechatronics. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a potential for teaching excellence and scholarly activity with continued professional development in the general area of Renewable Energy, Mechanical Design, CAD, Mechatronics or controls. This position involves teaching undergraduate and graduate students and developing an active, externally funded research program. It is anticipated that the candidate will attract funded research projects and contracts in their areas of research and develop links with relevant local industries and international agencies for collaborative research that will promote the mission of the university. The candidate must have the ability to lead and to be able to perform effectively as a team and a proven commitment to research at an international level as demonstrated by publications in refereed international journals and conference proceedings. Candidates must possess an ability to communicate effectively and work closely with students, faculty, staff, administration, and other stakeholders with diverse backgrounds.

Qualification & Experience

Candidates must have earned a doctorate (Ph. D.) and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field from an accredited institution or international equivalent is required for appointment. The successful candidate must be a mature person with at least 15 years of full-time university teaching and research experience in a similar environment with at least 15 publications in recognized indexed international journals. In addition, applicants for the Professorship in Mechanical Engineering must possess experience in supervising Masters and PhD students. Preference will be granted to candidates who possess a comprehensive comprehension of the accrediting process as outlined in the Washington Accord and have a minimum of 8 years of experience as members of an accreditation team. Candidates who have shown exceptional proficiency in university-level teaching and research, along with experience in laboratory-based instruction, online or blended instruction, industrial experience, and a willingness to teach in multiple areas of the undergraduate and graduate curriculum, will be given priority. Special considerations will be given to candidates with demonstrated practical skills in Mechanical Design, Energy, Mechatronics and CAD.

Conditions of Service

Professor

  • Base Salary Range: PGK95,366 – PGK116,558 per annum
  • International Market Allowance (IMA) Range: PGK105,320 – PGK162,617 per annum

(Level of appointment depends upon qualification and experience)

The initial contract period is for three years. Benefits include a gratuity of 30% of salary in the first year, 35% in the second year, and 40% in the third year (paid on fortnightly basis), support for approved research, appointment and repatriation fares for yourself and dependents, book & equipment allowance of PGK750.00 per semester, settling-in/out allowance of PGK2, 300.00 for single & PGK5, 000.00 for accompanied plus PGK300.00 for each of two authorized dependent children (under 19 years) on appointment and repatriation, six weeks paid leave per year, recreation leave fares for yourself, spouse & two authorized dependents after 18 months of service and education fares and assistance towards school fees for authorized dependents are available. Staff members are also permitted to earn from consultancy up to 50% of their earnings annually. Consultancy projects need to be approved by the respective Head of Department and the Vice Chancellor’s office. Furnished accommodation is provided on campus. All earnings in PNG attract income tax, the tax rates are progressive and the maximum rate is 40%.
